Tasmania might be small, but when it comes to family adventures, it’s huge on experiences. We recently packed three full days with fun, food, and unforgettable sights in and around Hobart—and here’s how it went.
Day 1 – Hobart Eats & Waterfront Strolls
We landed in Hobart and hit the ground running. First stop? Mures Lower Deck at Franklin Wharf for some next-level seafood. If you love fresh fish and stunning harbour views, this is your place.

With dessert on our minds, we wandered over to Van Diemen’s Land Creamery—famous for its creamy, inventive ice cream flavours (yes, including whisky!).
From there, it was time to check into our Airbnb (apartment link here). The four-bedroom apartment on Brooke Street was a total winner—spacious, stylish, and perched above a buzzing tapas bar. Even better, it was just steps from the MONA ferry, Salamanca Markets, and Hobart’s lively waterfront cafés, restaurants, and parks.

Day 2 – MONA & A Grown-Ups’ Night Out
We started the day with a ferry ride to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)—and wow, what a view on the way over. Once there, we explored room after room of fascinating, strange, and thought-provoking exhibits. This is a huge day for families. The little kids all fell asleep on the ferry home! Definitely take your stroller/pram!

Parent tip: While there’s plenty for kids to see, MONA also has some very adult content. Close supervision is a must—no letting the kids dash ahead! Luckily, there are plenty of outdoor areas for them to burn off energy too.
One surprise? The food. MONA had recently gone fully vegan, but the website still showed the old menu. We weren’t quite prepared for the switch, so maybe double-check before you go.
That evening, we called in Emma from Babysitters R Us to watch the kids, while the adults headed to Malik in North Hobart—a contemporary Greek restaurant serving beautifully crafted dishes. A short Uber ride and absolutely worth it.
Day 3 – Nature, Wildlife & History
Our third day started bright and early with Heart of Tasmania Tours, who planned the perfect itinerary for our family.
We began at Mount Field National Park, walking the easy trails to Russell Falls and Horseshoe Falls—both magical spots surrounded by lush rainforest.

Lunch was at Coal River Farm, where the kids got to meet farm animals while we enjoyed a relaxed meal. If you’re going, we recommend popping in for morning or afternoon tea instead, as the kids’ lunch options were limited.

The afternoon highlight was Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. In the most breathtaking natural setting, we got up close to wombats, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils on a guided tour. The kids loved every minute.

Day 4 – Port Arthur & Scenic Wonders
On our final day, we headed to the Port Arthur Historic Site—a fascinating (and sobering) look at Australia’s convict history.

Lunch was at Bangor Vineyard Shed, where the food was exceptional and the views over the vineyard were stunning.

In the afternoon, we explored the Forestier Peninsula, taking in the dramatic rock formations of Devil’s Kitchen and Tasman Arch before stopping at the Tessellated Pavement. It was the perfect last glimpse of Tassie’s wild beauty before Heart of Tasmania Tours whisked us back to the airport.

Final Thoughts
In just three days, we managed to fit in world-class art, spectacular nature, incredible food, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Tassie is proof that you don’t need weeks to have an epic family adventure—just a good plan and a little energy!
