Giving the Gift of Adventure: Learning to Dive in Fiji with My Teen
Looking for a travel experience that’s more than just a holiday? One that builds confidence, responsibility, and unforgettable memories? Taking my 13-year-old son to Fiji to complete his PADI Junior Open Water Diving Certification was just that — a gift that turned into a lifelong skill.
Why We Chose Diving
Teenagers are at the perfect age to explore new passions, and scuba diving is one that blends adventure, independence, and the thrill of discovery. We booked with Subsurface Fiji, a fantastic dive company located at Musket Cove Resort. I got my cerrtification with Subsurface 10 years ago! So we felt confident in their care from the moment we arrived.

Even before we left Australia, my son had already started his learning journey. The online PADI e-learning theory course allowed him to understand key concepts, safety rules, and equipment basics ahead of time. This meant that once we landed in Fiji, we could jump straight into the fun part: diving!

A 3-Day Dive Journey in Paradise
The course took place over three days in the ocean, with a calm, patient, and encouraging instructor who spoke perfect English. He had a natural gift for explaining things in a way that made sense to a teen — both on land and under the water.
Under his guidance, my son practiced each required skill: from mask clearing to buoyancy control — until he could do it independently. It was amazing to watch his confidence grow with each dive.

To become certified, he had to complete:
- An oline study component
- Confined pool or shallow skill dives
- A minimum of 4 open water dives
- Demonstrate all the safety and emergency skills
- Learn to assemble, check, and dismantle dive gear
- Perform a proper buddy check before every dive
It was incredible to watch him take it all on and thrive!

What Are the Requirements for PADI Junior Open Water?

✅ Pass basic swim skills:

Once certified, PADI Junior Open Water Divers:

-

For teens aged 15 and up, the Junior designation is removed, and the certification becomes a full Open Water Diverlicense.
Why It’s More Than Just a Certificate
Sure, diving is an impressive skill — but it’s also a powerful teacher. It taught my son responsibility, courage, and resilience. He had to take safety seriously, think critically, and stay calm in a completely new environment, all while having an absolute blast!
And for me? It was an unforgettable opportunity to learn alongside him, share a passion for the ocean, and create core memories together beneath the surface of the sea.

Thinking of Taking the Plunge?
If you're after a family holiday that combines fun, personal growth, and screen-free adventure, getting your teen PADI certified might be the perfect fit. Whether you head to Fiji or explore somewhere closer to home, the experience will stay with you forever.
We can’t recommend Subsurface Fiji enough — their professionalism, friendliness, and attention to safety made the whole journey enjoyable and stress-free.
